Tunnel boring machine (TBM) 鈥楥leopatra鈥 has completed an 8km drive across north London from Eade Road in Haringey to the St John鈥檚 Wood substation. Together with earlier tunnelling by TBM, Evelyn, almost half of the planned 32km of the London Power Tunnels (LPT) project has now been completed.
Skanska is carrying out the tunnelling on behalf of main contractor Costain. Halcrow, Mott MacDonald and VVB are also on the team.
The project is creating new routes for 400kV high-voltage electricity cables beneath the capital.
Cleopatra, a 400-tonne, 130m-long TBM, has carved a 4m-diameter tunnel from Haringey, via Finsbury Park, Camden and Regents Park to St John鈥檚 Wood. She has removed 250,000m鲁 of earth and installed 36,000 concrete tunnel lining segments.
