London super-sewer looks to Neville Simms

9 Dec 13 Sir Neville Simms, the man who led Tarmac and gave birth to Carillion in the 1990s, has been appointed as chairman of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The one-time frontman for the Channel Tunnel contractors鈥 joint venture will now oversee the raising of the 拢4.1bn required to build London鈥檚 planned 鈥榮uper sewer鈥.

eight contractors have recently been shortlisted for the 拢2.3bn main construction packages

The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25km-long sewer that is designed to help tackle the problem of overflows from the capital鈥檚 Victorian sewers and protect the River Thames from pollution.

The project is expected to be financed and delivered by an independent infrastructure provider (IP), with its own licence from Ofwat. Thames Water, Ofwat and the government are continuing to work together to finalise the financing arrangements for the project. Procurement of the new IP is expected to begin in 2014 and is anticipated to take between six to nine months.
