The architects鈥攚ho also designed improvements to transform London's Borough Market, now a popular food tourism destination鈥攈ave been working on the scheme since 2001. The work has been led by Nick Mitchell, who grew up in Hudderfield.

"For me," Mitchell said, "This project is a special one. I鈥檓 very proud to have the opportunity to work on a building that I know well and have seen change over the last few decades. t鈥檚 a very dynamic and exciting time for Huddersfield, with lots of regeneration projects in progress, which will come to fruition in the next 5-10 years. The proposals here build on the most successful aspects of the market, with some key moves to modernise the facilities and take care of the existing building. These changes have been carefully considered to help secure the market鈥檚 place in a changing retail environment."

David Shepherd, executive director for place at Kirklees Council, said, "The regeneration of the market is about creating a welcoming space that works for traders, shoppers and visitors. The proposals are designed to help the market respond to changing high street patterns and support activity throughout the week.

鈥淭he proposed multi-use space would allow for a wider range of events, designed to complement daytime trading. The intention is to enhance the overall experience for visitors while continuing to support the market鈥檚 role as an important part of the community.鈥
