In response to a Freedom of Information request, the Highway Agency revealed that it spent £15.3m on renewing road markings in 2013/14, compared to just £6.8m the previous year.
However, expenditure on renewing traffic signs declined to £2.7m in 2013/14, down from £3.3m the previous year.
Additionally, according to information held, the Highways Agency spent a further £6.6m on new traffic signs and road markings on its major projects, nearly double the £3.5m spent the previous year.
“It should be noted that the agency do not currently have a breakdown of costs for every scheme completed, the Highways Agency cautioned. “Therefore it should be noted that the full costs to the Agency for road markings and traffic signs are likely to be significantly higher.
